what Medieval rituals are present in our lives;
what do we owe to the Middle Ages;
why is calling the Middle Ages “primitive” is a mistake.
In our times, saying that something comes from the Middle Ages, or that it is Medieval, comes across as pejorative. By that, people mean archaic methods, civilizational backwardness, or anachronic approach. However, the truth about those times is completely different, and we enjoy the use of its legacy even today. One Medieval custom that survived until today is the attachment to faithfulness and swearing oathsoaths. The custom of solemnly swearing oaths to higher entities (such as the law, state, or God), so widespread and appreciated, survives into our times as well. Both politicians and the soldiers that defend our borders swear loyalty to their own state and law. The shape of our sciences and knowledge acquisition is, to a great extent, legacy of the Middle Ages as well. The development of schools and the desire to broaden one’s knowledge led to the creation of universitiesuniversities, many of which survive into our times. Those boasting centuries‑old traditions oftentimes rank high in the international listings, attracting, much like they have in the centuries before, the best students and professors. Every day we may appreciate the legacy of the Middle Ages present in our surroundings. It is especially visible in the centers of Western European cities. Despite the passing of many years, reconstruction of cities and changes in art and culture, we may come across many breathtaking Medieval buildings – churches, cathedralscathedrals, castles and palaces. They express not only the resilience and might of the ideas of the Middle Age, but also, owing to their beauty and mystery, show that the Middle Ages were not sad and primitive times at all.
