Inspector: Good morning.

Farmer: Good morning. What brings you here?

Inspector: I’m an employee of the Inspection for Environmental Protectionm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279637332_0Inspection for Environmental Protection. You needed help in order to determine the reasons for your yieldm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279718401_0yield losses.

Farmer: Of course. Please, come in. Will this help me determine the right doses of ***fertilizers?***m26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279733582_0***fertilizers?***

Inspector: Yes, it’s necessary to study the soil and determine fertilizer recommendations. I will add that the rules for sampling arise from legal provisions. We’re interested in the Polish Standard in which the procedure is given.

Farmer: What place is good for sampling?

Inspector: Samples shouldn’t be collected from the outskirts of the fieldm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279738479_0outskirts of the field, in places after stacks and mounds, and in hollows and sharp elevations.

Farmer: I have different crops in the field, does this matter?

Inspector: Of course. The samples should be prepared separately for each crop. You’re allowed to take one sample from different crops if they have similar requirements and a field fertilization historym26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279743621_0fertilization history.

Farmer: How will you collect the samples?

Inspector: I’ll collect the soil samples from the soil profilem26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279748379_0soil profile from the arable layerm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279753543_0arable layer from the depth of up to 20cm, and from the subsoil layerm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279762480_0subsoil layer. Then a 30cm hole should be dug, and the soil from the 40cm soil profile should be collected.

Farmer: What will be used to collect the samples?

Inspector: Egner's soil stickm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279767416_0Egner's soil stick. You can also use a drillm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279772536_0drill, or a spadem26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279777622_0spade.

Farmer: How do you use Egner's soil stick?

Inspector: You dig the stick vertically into the soil and take it out after turning it. Then from the tunnel for collecting the soil columnm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279782995_0soil column, you scrape the entire contents into boxes with labelsm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279793098_0labels. You use a scraper for soil samplesm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279787842_0scraper for soil samples for the scraping.

Farmer: Are there any other recommendations when collecting samples?

Inspector: All activities related to the collection and transport of samplesm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279799633_0transport of samples should be performed in laboratory gloves, and protective goggles should be used to cover your eyes.

Farmer: In that case, let’s get to work.

Inspector: Yes, let’s go to the designated sampling sites for each crop.

Air quality analysis

The hypertext material presents an information leaflet on the methods of measuring suspended particulates in the air.

Hipertekst przedstawia ulotkę informacyjną na temat metod pomiaru pyłu zawieszonego w powietrzu.

m26782edbcaedf1c3_1531126760943_0

As part of the State Environmental Monitoring, measurements of PM10 and PM2.5 suspended particulatesm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292341857_0suspended particulates, with particle diameters up to 10 μm and 2.5 μm respectively, are carried out. The Inspection for Environmental Protectionm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497279637332_0Inspection for Environmental Protection examines the content of particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 in the air, using the m26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292330786_0m26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292330786_0gravimetric methodm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292330786_0gravimetric method (reference method).

In this method, the so‑called dust collectorsm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292326285_0dust collectorsare used. They are special devices which suck in atmospheric airm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292312053_0atmospheric air. Every two weeks, 14 disposable filters are mounted onto the collector. The device changes them automatically every 24 hours. Each filter has its own unique identification number. Before mounting, the clean filters are conditionedm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292307534_0conditioned and weighedm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292302003_0weighed in the laboratory, placed in special containers for transportm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292294450_0containers for transport, and then transported to the measuring stationm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292283746_0measuring station and placed in the collector. After 14 days, all filtersm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292278430_0filters are removed, placed in special containers for transport and transported back to the laboratory.

In the laboratory, the filters are conditioned and weighed for the second time, now as filters after the so‑called exposure. The dust concentrationsm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497292272551_0dust concentrations are calculated on the basis of the mass differences before and after the filter exposure, related to the air flow volume in the collector. These concentrations are given in micrograms per cubic meter [μg/m3]. The advantage of this measuring method is its very high accuracy.

Work safety rules

The hypertext material presents a fragment of training materials. It concerns the threats concerned with conducting laboratory works.

Hipertekst przedstawia fragment materiału szkoleniowego. Dotyczy zagrożeń występujących podczas prowadzenia prac laboratoryjnych.

m26782edbcaedf1c3_1531126536542_0

The most important thing in laboratory work is safety.

1. The place where chemical reactionsm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302764422_0chemical reactions and chemical processesm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302754287_0chemical processes are carried out must be adequately ventilated.
2. Only activities such as weighing, siftingm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302748645_0sifting solids, filtrationm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302736917_0filtration, pouringm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302733680_0pouring with the use of aqueous solutionsm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302728712_0aqueous solutions non‑hazardous to the human body can be carried out on a laboratory tablem26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302618223_0laboratory table.
3. We carry out the majority of activities under a well‑functioning ventilatorm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302614191_0ventilator. Flammable substancesm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302609415_0Flammable substances, such as organic solvents, must be made in special fume hoods.
4. All people in the laboratory must have alab coatm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302603612_0lab coatand protective gogglesm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302598187_0protective goggles on. The lab coat should be made of natural fibers and fastened with a few buttons.
5. The goggles should protect the eyes completely, therefore goggles with a large area with side ridges are recommended.
6. While working with dangerous caustic substancesm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302589553_0caustic substances, we protect our hands by using protective glovesm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302944027_0protective gloves.
7. Sometimes we use dust masksm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302952671_0dust masks that protect us against poisonous solid substancesm26782edbcaedf1c3_1497302963254_0solid substances. We put them on during weighing, or sifting.
8. You should know where the emergency equipment is located in the laboratory room: the fire extinguisher, the first aid kit, adsorbents, OHS instructions and the emergency exit.
9. Before starting work, familiarize yourself with the data sheets of dangerous substances present in the laboratory. You will learn in detail what to do in the case of danger, and what you need to pay special attention to.
