Noise pollution

The hypertext material is an email to a company director from an inspector of the State Sanitary Inspectorate regarding recommendations for protection against noise.

Hipertekst stanowi e‑mail skierowany do dyrektora przedsiębiorstwa od inspektora Państwowej Inspekcji Sanitarnej w sprawie zaleceń w ramach ochrony przed hałas

m6bbce4aac134bd61_1531126402509_0

Dear Sir,

Due to the occurrence of exceeded permissible noise levels and mechanical vibrationsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279637332_0mechanical vibrations, adjustments to the standards and legal provisions should be made in your company.

1) Your employees should be equipped with personalm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279718401_0personalprotection measuresm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279718401_0protection measures against noise, in other words hearing protectorsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279733582_0hearing protectors, such as earmuffsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279738479_0earmuffsand ear protectorsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1533640065472_0ear protectors.
2) The used hearing protectors should have the CE label. This means that they meet the hearing protectionm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279743621_0hearing protection standards and are selected in terms of acoustic parameters for noise at a particular workplace, as well as in terms of individual characteristics and needs of an employee.
3) The proper use of the machine in accordance with its purpose also has a major impact on the noise emission from the source. It is necessary to use acoustic protectionsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279748379_0acoustic protections constituting machine equipment elements attached to the machine by the manufacturer.
4) It is also important to systematically and properly maintain the machine and keep it in a good technical condition.
5) I also recommend the use of collective protection measuresm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279753543_0collective protection measures. This will reduce noise on the transmission path. These measures may include: sound absorbing and insulating enclosuresm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279762480_0sound absorbing and insulating enclosures, acoustic silencersm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279767416_0acoustic silencers, acoustic screens and industrial soundproof boothsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279772536_0industrial soundproof booths, sound absorbing materialsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279777622_0sound absorbing materialsand active noise reduction systemsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279782995_0active noise reduction systems.
6) Thanks to the grouping of noise sourcesm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279787842_0grouping of noise sources in different rooms, and the separation of the work areas with different levels of noise emission, the employees operating quieter devices will not be exposed to the noise coming from the louder devices. This will reduce the number of workers exposed to noise pollution.
7) It is necessary to take breaks at work and reduce the working time on noisy stations.

Please, apply the above recommendations immediately.

Best regards,

Inspector of the State Sanitary Inspectoratem6bbce4aac134bd61_1497279793098_0State Sanitary Inspectorate.

Air pollution

The hypertext material is a fragment of an industry article. It discusses the phenomenon of temperature inversion and the main causes of air pollution.

Hipertekst stanowi fragment artykułu branżowego. Omawia zjawisko inwersji temperatury oraz główne przyczyny zanieczyszczenia powietrza.

m6bbce4aac134bd61_1531126760943_0

Smog occurs during the heating season, when the energy demand resulting from low temperatures is the greatest. During this period, temperature inversionm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292341857_0temperature inversion occurs. The inversion of temperature is an atmospheric phenomenon in meteorologym6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292338305_0meteorology, and is based on the increase of air temperature with altitude. Under normal conditions, in the tropospherem6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292330786_0troposphere, the air closer to the surface of the earth is warmer than the air that is higher up. This results from the fact that the air warms up from the heated surface of the Earth. Then, the heated air rises upwards due to convectionm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292326285_0convection. As a result of adiabatic transformationm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292312053_0adiabatic transformation, the rising air cools (the pressure is lower higher up). As a result of the phenomena occurring in the atmosphere, a reverse temperature system is possible.

Such a phenomenon may be caused by, for example the accumulation of fogm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292307534_0fog, or differences in atmospheric pollution. The composition of air pollution includes gasesm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292302003_0gasesand aerosolsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292294450_0aerosols. They are solid and liquid particles that float in the air and affect the natural composition of atmospheric air. Gaseous air pollutants are mainly nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, so‑called volatile organic compounds. They affect soil and water and, most importantly, pose a threat to human, animal and plant health. The gases get into our atmosphere mostly by burning fossil fuelsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292283746_0fossil fuels. Volatile compoundsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292278430_0Volatile compounds are an exception because they get into the atmosphere from natural sources. Pollutants from natural sources are, for example:
volcanic eruptionsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292272551_0volcanic eruptions: volcanic ash and gases;
swampsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292265719_0swamps: methane, carbon dioxide;
● forest, savanna, and steppe fires: carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide;
geysersm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292257697_0geysers: hydrogen sulphide, arsenic; soils and erodible rocks;
sandstormsm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497292242188_0sandstorms;

Journalist: Welcome to the newest episode of our program. Today we have the pleasure to host a doctor of biological sciences, Mister Adam Smith.

Doctor: Good morning.

Journalist: Could you tell us about the methods of removing dust pollution from the air?

Doctor: There are dry and wet methods. The most common devices for cleaning the air are cyclonesm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302764422_0cyclones, electrostatic filtersm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302754287_0electrostatic filters and wet filtersm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302748645_0wet filters, in other words scrubbers.

Journalist: How do wet filters work?

Doctor: Wet filters, colloquially known as scrubbers, combine the effect of centrifugal forcesm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302736917_0centrifugal forcesand fabric filtersm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302733680_0fabric filters. The impurities are washed out of the filters in the form ofsludgem6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302728712_0sludge.

Journalist: And how do electrostatic filters work?

Doctor: These devices improve the quality of the air by removing impurities, such as smokem6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302618223_0smoke, dustm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302614191_0dust, mitesm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302609415_0mites. The principle of operation is based on the use of the ionizationm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302603612_0ionization phenomenon.

Journalist: I understand. What can we do regarding the removal of gaseous pollutants?

Doctor: I would like to talk about the method of gaseous pollutant combustionm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302598187_0gaseous pollutant combustion. Combustion is one of the most commonly used methods for removing very environmentally hazardous hydrocarbons, solvent vapors, or toxic substancesm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302589553_0toxic substances from flue gases. The fuel burned in the burner generates an oxidizing zone in the combustion chamber, in which the complete oxidation of impurities takes place. Instead of minimizing the effects of pollution, it is worth thinking about its causes, though.

Journalist: What do you mean?

Doctor: We can reduce the emission of harmful substances generated during engine operation. For this purpose, we use a catalystm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302944027_0catalyst. It's a professional name for a reactor, afterburner, or a catalytic converterm6bbce4aac134bd61_1497302952671_0catalytic converter.

Journalist: You’re right indeed. Prevention is better than cure.

Doctor: Exactly.
